I am Sam Murdoch. I build websites and AI systems, and I have spent ten years learning how businesses actually work before I build for them.
Most of my career has been enterprise transformation: leading ERP implementations, mapping business processes, building integrations between systems, and turning messy data into reporting people can trust. I led the business-analysis delivery for a large ERP rollout, built EDI and API integrations on tight budgets, migrated HR and investment data through mergers, and mentored other analysts along the way. That work taught me the thing most developers learn too late, that the hard part is rarely the code. It is understanding the fifty small business rules nobody wrote down.
These days I put that to work building things directly. Websites for businesses that need one done properly. AI products that ship and stay up. Data migrations where every record has to be right. I do the whole thing myself, from the first conversation to the live system, and I build the proof in so you can see it works.
I care about a few things, consistently. That we agree what "right" looks like before I start, and that I am held to it. That if something is not right, I own it and make it right, no argument. That the work reads well to people and to the AI assistants that now recommend businesses. That "done" means proven, not just running. And that you get the honest version, including when the honest version is that you should spend less than you were about to.
I am based in Point Cook, Victoria, and I work with clients anywhere.
Why we're called Burl
A burl is the woody knot at the base of a mallee tree. When a fire clears everything above the ground, the burl is the part that lives. It holds the buds and the energy, and it shoots back from the root.
I grew up in the Mallee, so the name is a nod home. But I mostly like what it means. In business and in life we get burned to the ground sometimes, and we grow back from it. That is the kind of work I want to do, for people who are building something and want it to last.
10+ years senior business analysis and ERP transformation (Pronto XI, Dynamics GP), integrations (EDI, APIs, webhooks), reporting and BI (Cognos, Power BI), AgilePM Foundation.
